The highly anticipated Emerging From Darkness: Faith, Emotion & The Baroque exhibition has opened to immense support at Hamilton Gallery, but there’s not long left to experience this once-in-a-lifetime collection of baroque masterpieces! Featuring important works seldom seen outside of major institutions, Emerging From Darkness offers a rare opportunity for audiences right here in Greater Hamilton.
Curated by leading experts in the field, this exhibition presents over 70 rare and world-renowned baroque masterpieces thanks to a unique partnership with the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) and National Gallery of Australia (NGA) and private lenders. Get up close with works that changed the course of art history during the emotionally charged baroque period, including world-renowned masters like Artemisia Gentileschi and Peter Paul Rubens. It’s a chance to view extraordinary paintings, drawings and prints that celebrate both religious devotion and the raw humanity of the human experience.
Due to the international caliber of the artworks on display, Emerging From Darkness will not tour to other galleries after it concludes here in April 2024. Tickets are just $20 for adults and $15 for concessions, with under 18s free, and the whole ground floor is free to visit, containing contemporary works by female artists working in the baroque style as well as the HG Design Store. You’ll find value in exploring the rarely seen masterpieces that explore spirituality, politics, religion and socio-cultural issues of the era.
The gallery is also hosting one-off and regular events like an insightful seminar a ‘creative mixer’ and an Australian Chamber Choir concert in an atmospheric church, plus creative workshops for kids and sensory activities for babies and toddlers.
