Discover Tarrington
German Heritage. Pinot Central. The Birthplace Of Hay Bale Art.
Rich in history and ripe with wine, Tarrington will capture your attention and fill your glass.
Originally named Hochkirk by its German founder in 1853, the small town and community of Tarrington has a strong and ever-present German heritage.
With a dedicated 10-kilometre cycling track, get to know Tarrington up close and personal by riding through the picturesque pastoral region.
Pierrepoint, Hochkirch and Mount Napier. These are some of Tarrington’s finest wine makers and major players of the renowned Henty Wine Region. This cool climate wine district is revered for its production of chardonnay, riesling, semillon, sauvignon blanc and pinot noir. It is also known for its cellar doors and spectacular views of vineyards flowing across the landscape.
Magnificently dominating Tarrington’s skyline is the St Michael Lutheran Church; a gothic-revival-inspired church built in 1927. In the light of day, the church is striking to behold but as night settles and the floodlights illuminate the spire and red bricks, it is absolutely jaw-dropping.
Community spirit shines through when Tarrington’s hay bale art lines the streets and paddocks, dressed up and uniquely decorated for the much-loved and eagerly-anticipated annual Laternenfest. Imagination and skills embellish the once plain hay bales, turning them into movie characters, mythical beasts, Aussie icons and many other original creations. At Laternenfest itself, you can also taste German Kuchen cake, watch traditional maypole dancing, compete in the stein-holding competition and soak up the community spirit.
There is so much to love, so fill your glass and raise it to Tarrington.
