Discover Penshurst

Bluestone buildings. Volcanic discoveries. Mount Rouse. Breath… taken.

An explosive history and a never-failing spring with a village feel.  Penshurst is the perfect blend of charm and fascination.

Penshurst connects the Great Ocean Road to the Grampians (Gariwerd) National Park. Cosied up beside the now dormant volcano of Collorrer (Mount Rouse), the town is reminiscent of yesteryear.  Beautiful bluestone buildings and towering elm trees line the town’s entrance, taking you back to a time when the early settlers became as rich as the volcanic soils of the area.

Cross the threshold of one such historic bluestone building and step into the explosive world of volcanoes at the Volcanoes Discovery Centre and Rock Garden.  Penshurst is situated in the heart of volcanic country and as such has a rich history of volcanic eruptions and flowing lava.  The Volcanoes Discovery Centre guides you through this transformative era in an educating and immersive manner.

Step foot onto the site of once active volcano, Collorrer (Mount Rouse).  A steady incline to its peak allows you to take in the magnificent views of the Western District Plains.  A walk around the dry crater lake will give you firsthand insight into the depth and breadth of this natural wonder.

Take in the serenity of the Penshurst Botanic Gardens; a natural wetland complete with a never failing spring, resplendent lake, a series of narrow waterways and 13 acres of lush scenery.  The gardens provide a peaceful respite to all visitors and when Autumn unfolds, the orange hues of the soaring trees are spectacular.

Penshurst also boasts hidden retail gems and indulgent dining experiences like The Penshurst Store; a bakery offering bespoke pies, scrumptious pastries and a unique gift store. Dine in or takeaway available.

With contrasting experiences, Penshurst is undoubtedly a town that will capture your heart with its charm and take your breath away with its natural beauty.
